Tech Savvy: An Apple a Day

Another major factor that makes them great form home users is the built in software suite that Apple calls iLife ( iLife is a suite of applications(iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb and iDVD) that cover most of the things you might want to do on your home computer. For example iPhoto is the digital picture application and it is awesome. It allows you to easily organize, edit and manage your digital pictures. It can even detect people’s faces in the pictures and remember them. This feature allows me to easily find every picture with a certain person in it. iMovie allows you to import video from your video camera and edit it to create home movies that you can share with friends and family. I am not going to go through all of the iLife applications in detail in this article. Suffice it to say that they cover all the bases and everyone of them is better than its Windows competitor.

Another major benefit to Apple computers is the built-in back up software called Time Machine. Time Machine is very sophisticated and nearly fool-proof. As long as you connect you Apple computer to an external disk from time to time, Time Machine will take care of the rest. It will automatically manage the space on your back up disk, keeping as many files and versions as possible and automatically getting rid of older versions of files as necessary. Also, if you buy a new Apple computer use can use your Time Machine backup to move all of your applications and files from the old computer to the new one.

Also, since Apple computers represent a small minority of the computers on the internet, there are very few Viruses and Spyware programs created to attack these computers. This means that people who use Apple Computers are spared the headaches that most Windows PC users suffer with malware attacks. Please note however that this does not mean an Apple computer user can surf the web with impunity. You should still be cautious about what links you click on or download regardless of the type of computer you are using.

My last point in support of Apple computers for home users is that many of you might have avoided purchasing one because there is no local Apple store. The nearest retail Apple stores are Jacksonville and Atlanta. What you may not know is that the Tech Shop at VSU is a certified Apple store. They can sell and service Apple computers. I know several of the guys in there and they are great. So if you have an Apple computer that needs work, or are interested in taking a closer look at one check out the VSU Tech shop ( 229.219.1398)
